Brewing Better Coffee At Home: How To Make Pour Over Coffee

If you want to taste more of what your coffee has to offer, pour over is one of the best ways to do it. Compared to drip machines, pour over brewing gives you more control over extraction, which means more clarity, more sweetness, and more origin character in the cup.

It might look technical at first, but once you get the basics down, it becomes one of the most rewarding and consistent ways to brew coffee at home.

This guide covers both the Hario V60 and the Hario Switch so you can use whichever setup you have.

QUICK START BREW GUIDE (V60)

Grind: Medium coarse (coarse sea salt)
Ratio: 1:16 coffee to water
Example: 30g coffee to 480g water
Bloom: 45 seconds
Total Brew Time: 2:30 to 3:00

QUICK START BREW GUIDE (SWITCH)

Grind: Medium
Ratio: 1:15 coffee to water
Example: 30g coffee to 450g water
Steep Time: 2:00
Total Brew Time: 2:30 to 3:00

WHY POUR OVER TASTES DIFFERENT

Pour over brewing highlights clarity and flavor separation.

Where drip coffee can taste blended together, pour over lets you pick out individual tasting notes like fruit, florals, chocolate, or citrus.

This is why it is one of the most popular brew methods for single origin coffees.

START WITH FRESH COFFEE

Just like with drip coffee, freshness matters.

Coffee is at its best within a few weeks of roast. As it ages, aromatics fade and flavors flatten.

If you are brewing pour over, freshness becomes even more noticeable because the brew method is so clean and transparent.

GRIND SIZE

Grind size is one of the biggest factors in pour over success.

For V60:

Use a medium coarse grind. Think coarse sea salt.

Too fine and the brew stalls and tastes bitter.
Too coarse and the coffee tastes weak or sour.

For Switch:

Use a medium grind since the immersion phase extracts differently than a standard pour over.

COFFEE TO WATER RATIO

A great starting point for both methods is:

1 gram coffee to 16 grams water

Common brew size:

30g coffee to 480g water

If you want a stronger cup, move to 1:15. If you want lighter, move toward 1:17.

RINSE YOUR FILTER

Always rinse paper filters with hot water before brewing.

This removes papery taste and preheats your brewer and mug or carafe.

Do not forget to dump the rinse water before adding coffee.

LEVEL YOUR COFFEE BED

After adding ground coffee, gently shake the brewer to level the bed.

An even bed promotes even extraction and prevents channeling.

V60 POUR OVER METHOD

Step 1. Add Coffee
Add your ground coffee and tare your scale.

Step 2. Bloom
Pour about 2 to 3 times the coffee weight in water.

Example: 30g coffee = 60 to 90g water.

Let it bloom for 45 seconds. This releases trapped gas and preps extraction.

Step 3. Main Pour
Slowly pour in circles until you reach your total water weight.

Try pouring in stages rather than all at once to maintain brew control.

Step 4. Drawdown
Allow the coffee to drain fully.

Target total brew time: 2:30 to 3:00.

If it drains too fast, grind finer.
If it drains too slow, grind coarser.

HARIO SWITCH METHOD

The Switch combines pour over clarity with immersion body.

Step 1. Close The Switch Valve
Add your ground coffee and tare your scale.

Step 2. Add All Brew Water
Pour your full water amount in at once.

Example: 450g water for 30g coffee.

Step 3. Gentle Stir
Give a light stir to ensure all grounds are saturated.

Step 4. Steep
Let the coffee steep for 2 minutes.

Step 5. Release
Open the Switch and allow the coffee to drain.

Total brew time should land around 2:30 to 3:00.

BREW TIME TARGETS

V60: 2:30 to 3:00
Switch: 2:30 to 3:00 total including steep

Too fast = under extracted and sour.
Too slow = over extracted and bitter.

TROUBLESHOOTING FLAVOR

If your coffee tastes sour or sharp:

Grind finer
Use hotter water
Extend brew time slightly

If your coffee tastes bitter or heavy:

Grind coarser
Pour more gently
Reduce brew time

If it tastes weak:

Use more coffee
Tighten your ratio

WHICH METHOD SHOULD YOU USE?

Use V60 if you want:

Maximum clarity
Bright acidity
Tea like body

Use Switch if you want:

More body
More sweetness
Easier consistency

Both are excellent. It just depends on your taste preference.
