Peaberries don't happen on purpose. When a coffee cherry develops only one seed instead of two, that single bean gets all the nutrients to itself, and it tends to show in the cup. This lot from Nayarit, Mexico is a natural processed peaberry grown on volcanic soil by a collective of smallholder farmers across four communities: Cofradia de Chocolon, El Cuerenteno, La Yerba, and El Malinal.
The cup is rich and layered. Dark chocolate and molasses give it a familiar comfort, then apple, sweet cherry, and pineapple keep things interesting. There's a syrupy, heavy body that makes it feel substantial without being heavy-handed.
